E11 Blaster

ESB Stormtrooper with E-11 blaster

Stormtroopers of all sorts carried this blaster, which is identified as a "Blastech E-11" & was based on a British Sterling submachine gun.

There are several ways to get a nice looking E-11: Mod a real Sterling, build one out of PCV, buy a resin replica, or mod a Hasbro blaster.  I chose the last option because I got a good deal on Ebay.

This is still a work-in-progress, but here's how I'm making mine:

Here's our goal, a good-looking E-11 blaster prop to go along with my armor.

And here's the starting point:  2 Hasbro E-11 blasters from a few years back.  I guess Kenner  made some nice black ones back in the day, but this is what we're left to work with.

My 2 Hasbro blasters arrive!

Step 1:  Wait for the blasters to arrive.  With any luck I'll get it right the first time & be able to sell/trade the extra away to another trooper.

They've arrived! Click for a larger pic.

Prep work UPDATE!

Since I'm in a Halloween rush I decided to make a quick prototype out of one of the Hasbro blasters.  I started by lightly sanding down some of the copyright info from the plastic.  I didn't do a great job, but I plan on fixing this at some point.

I then used some electric tape to mask off the following sections:

  • the front of the orange tip(so that it will still light up)

  • the two "vents" on the tip so that the LED doesn't get painted

  • the screw for the battery compartment

"Finished" prototype Once everything was masked I gave the whole thing a "primer" coat with this metalic-chrome spray paint I had laying around.

When the chrome had dried I gave it a coat of the gloss-black I had used on the helmet pieces.  Before that had totally dried(it was still a bit tacky) I weathered the blaster by lightly dropping/dragging it around on the sidewalk.  The effect was that the black paint was removed leaving the metalic layer showing.  i.e. weathered!!!

Overall the black is a bit too glossy, so I'll either sand it all down a bit or just wait until I redo the whole thing.  Not bad for a first try if I say so myself. :)

  more on the way eventually...
